For those currently in Georgetown or Turks & Caicos considering sailing directly along the I-65 route to the BVI, rather than following the well-established and time-tested “Thornless Path” route by Bruce Van Sant, we would like to share some perspective.

The “Thornless Path” has been trusted by cruisers for decades. The following private message was shared with us by a long-term international delivery captain—an experienced professional with an estimated 350,000–400,000 nautical miles at sea—who sadly passed away in 2024. In his message, he clearly outlined the differences between the two routes and the considerations sailors should keep in mind.

“Hi there! The number of people waiting for a ‘weather window’ in George Town hasn’t changed over the years.

Trying to take the I-65 route from that far south is generally not advisable. You will be heading into the trade winds and equatorial current, so engines must be in excellent condition and you will need to carry additional fuel to maintain headway offshore. That route is more suitable for departures from the U.S. East Coast—Savannah and further north. From Southern Florida and below, it is often a missed opportunity.

A more prudent option is to drop down to the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and ‘coast hop’ using the guidance in The Thornless Path by Bruce Van Sant for those wishing to travel more gradually and safely. In addition, following weather routing advice from Chris Parker will help ensure a safer passage across the Mona Passage and onward south.”
